My name is Fernando O. Gonzalez and I am an independent photographer currently exploring my photographic interests, currently focusing a photojournalistic style of imagery.
I grew up in southwest Florida, always knowing that my true home was somewhere among the sprawling expanses of roads, tall buildings and large populations that make up the American metropolis. I was so sure, in fact, that my very first visit to New York City took place only after I had already accepted a position as a “Genius” for the then-under-construction flagship Apple Store on Fifth Avenue.
Shortly after relocating to New York, I was mobilized in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I deployed with the 1/329th Chemical Company (CS), a US Army Reserve unit based out of Orlando, FL. I spent just over a year on Active Duty and was very glad to return home safely, along with the 29 other Soldiers I deployed with. While deployed, I had the good sense to invest a little bit of money on my first SLR camera and a few lenses. I had always had an interest in photography, and ever since that first shutter release, I was hooked.
Throughout my tour of duty, I captured many of the people, places and events that the 329th experienced while overseas. Our platoon performed six Hazardous Materials operations and part of my duties as the Chemical Operations NCO was to document and oversee the operations. Much of the work done by the 329th was ground-breaking. The best practices established by these new missions are being reviewed by the US Army Chemical School in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. I had the honor of meeting Brigadier General Spoehr, then-commandant of the school, to present these practices established by the 329th. My photography played a key role in conveying these concepts to BG Spoehr and his staff. I was also honored to have several of my images published in the local newspapers on Camp Victory and even had a single image published on the widely-distributed Army Times. It was this experience that has led me to wish to develop my interests in photojournalism.
Since my discharge from Active Duty, I have settled back into my civilian lifestyle, embracing the latest in technology and enjoying all the exciting events that take place on a daily basis in New York City.
I hope you will take a moment to browse through my images, the majority of which can be found on my SmugMug account. Your feedback and support is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
- Fernando
